Start with the fundamentals
Your putting style is as individual your fingerprint. However, using basic fundamentals as a starting point, you can work to find a putting stroke that is best for you. Once you find a stroke that works stick with it. Below are some fundamentals that virtually every great putter has. Check them out and see if there is something that you use to improve your putting.
Basic fundamentals
Body, head and eyes need to remain still.
Be confident.
Keep your eyes over the ball.
The ball should be at or ahead of the center of your stance.
Keep feet and shoulders aligned parallel to your target line.
Maintain a light grip on the club.
Accelerate through the ball.
Firm left wrist
The left wrist breaking down during the stroke is one of the leading causes of inconsistent contact with ball. To prevent this try this simple drill. Using your normal grip place a golf ball between the putter handle and your left arm. Now take several practice strokes with the ball in place. If the ball falls out, it is because your left wrist is breaking down. Once you have made several successful strokes remove the ball and continue making strokes with a firm left wrist.
Shorten your backstroke
Many golfers take a long backstroke then decelerate coming into the ball. This causes inconsistency in the putting stroke. To correct this drop a ball about 20-25 feet from the hole. Then place another ball about 8" behind the first one. Now make a smooth stroke on the first ball without hitting the second one. You will find that you need to accelerate through the putt to get the ball to the hole. This should help you with consistent contact and distance control.
Tunnel vision putting
Ever caught yourself peeking to see if you made the putt, only to find you just missed. Head and eye movement can be deadly to your putting stroke. Here is a little drill to help. Place your ball marker directly behind your ball, then make a normal putting stroke. Instead of looking to see if you made the putt, concentrate on your ball mark. You'll know soon enough whether you made the putt.
