What Makes the Masters Tournament So Special?

It’s almost here. Early April, one of sports most magical events will take place when The Masters Golf Tournament reconvenes in Augusta, Georgia. Every year, millions from around the world tune in, ready to watch history be made once more. It is a special place, perhaps Golf’s heaven, for certain reasons we all can appreciate.

First, The Masters Tournament takes place in an ideal setting. There’s something special in the shadows the trees cast across the green grass and the way the southern light fills in the gaps. It’s like something out of a Robert Frost poem. There’s a sense of peace there. Even if the world is falling apart and the economy is tanking, we can still spend a few relaxing days watching the beautiful game of golf played in a beautiful setting.

Second, the Masters is where heroes are made. The tournament winners take on an almost mythical stature, if only for a brief time and like great kings from the past, they are bestowed with their own “crown”, the highly treasured green jacket. On a Sunday afternoon, they stand before all, and take place in a dramatic ceremony, where they go down in the annals of golf glory.

The Masters allows for all to shine. Every year, legendary players from Tiger Woods to Jack Nicklaus shine in golf’s most important tournament. It seems to bring the best out in these great players. However, it also seems to bring out the best in the underdogs. Golfers like Mike Weir come out of nowhere to shock the world. They add to a dramatic event that keeps golf enthusiasts coming back year after year.

For me personally, I can still remember watching the Masters with my own family. I have great memories of watching players like Nicklaus, Faldo and Woods make history. The final round on Sunday was a time for my family and I to be together and watch some of the greatest golf ever played.

Basically, there are many tangible reasons that make the Masters Tournament so special. However, it’s the intangibles - the drama we love, the players’ courage and determination, and a unique kind of magic you find in few sporting events. Luckily for us, it’s almost here once more.
